Can People Really Change?
It’s the question I hear most often in my mediation practice, usually asked quietly, and usually by someone who wants to believe the answer is yes.
After more than 40 years of helping couples through divorce, I’ve learned that change is possible, but it doesn’t happen by accident. In my latest video, I share three things to look for:
- Insight. The person has to understand how their behavior affects the people around them. Without that awareness, change is impossible.
- Are they changing now? Not someday, not “when things calm down.” Are they taking steps today, like seeing a doctor or psychiatrist, joining a mentor or accountability group, or doing something concrete right now?
- Are they blaming? Someone who keeps pointing the finger at others, which is especially common with narcissistic behavior, isn’t taking responsibility. And without responsibility, change doesn’t happen.
If you’re asking this question about someone in your life, I hope the video brings you some clarity.
